GUIBERT (Jacques-Antoine-Hippolyte de): General... - Lot 17 - Richard Maison de ventes
GUIBERT (Jacques-Antoine-Hippolyte de): General test of tactics. New edition published by his widow, on the manuscripts and according to the author's corrections. Paris, Magimel, n.d. 2 volumes bound in one. 19.5 by 25 cm. VII-(1)-214 pages, One portrait and 12 folding plates; (4)-127 pages, 15 folding plates. Period half-basane, spine with nerves traced in black. Worn corners, an old label on the spine. Interior in good condition (4 folding plates with small tears without missing or serious). New edition in in-4 format published by the widow of the author of one of the best war essays ever written, first published in 1772. It is the work of General Jacques de Guibert (1743-1790), one of the most skillful tacticians of the time but also one of the most controversial, which did not prevent Napoleon from feeding on this work, which he said was "a book that could train great men". The work comprises two volumes, each dealing with a different conception of tactics. The first volume deals with "Elementary Tactics" (education of troops, cavalry, light troops, artillery) while the second volume deals with "Great Tactics", that is to say the art of teaching how to gather the corps described in the previous part, to amalgamate them and "make them contribute to the execution of the great maneuvers of war", what the author calls "the science of generals". A sought-after book, here in a large edition.
