STRUYS (Jean): Jean Struys's travels in Moscovia, Tartaria, Persia, India and several other foreign countries () With the relationship of a shipwreck, the aftermath of which produced extraordinary effects. Amsterdam, Jean Sincère, 1730. 3 volumes. 9 by 16 cm. (8)-258-(6); (2)-232-(7); (2)-232-(2) pages. Title pages in two colours. Volume 1: A frontispiece, and 5 folding plates. Volume 2: A map and 8 folding plates. Volume 3: 5 folding plates and 8 single plates.(Complete). Full period binding, spine 5 nerves, red title coin, decorated boxes. Small defects on covers and at the bottom of two spines. Some freckles, and missing title page of volume 1 (the false title frontispiece is present). Left Holland in 1647, Struys visited Italy, the islands and coasts of the Archipelago, Persia, India, Japan and Formosa. In 1668 he sailed to Riga, crossed all of Russia and was held captive in Dagestan. After his release, he retired to the Hamburg region and published an account of his travels. The volume is superbly illustrated with panoramas of the cities he crossed and scenes of customs. It is followed by the Relation of the sinking of a Dutch ship named Ter Schelling, towards the coast of Bengal, a worthy predecessor of the Medusa.
