(Trévoux). MONTAIGNE (Michel de). Essays of Michel, lord of - Lot 18
(Trévoux). MONTAIGNE (Michel de). Essays of Michel, lord of Montaigne given on the oldest & most correct editions: increased by several letters of the author, & where the Greek, Latin & Italian passages, are translated more faithfully, & quoted more exactly than in any of the preceding ones. With notes; & a general table of contents more useful than those which had appeared until now. Fourth edition, increased with the life of Montagne & new notes which are not found in the last three editions published in 1724-1725 & 1727. London, Jean Nourse [Trévoux], 1739, 6 volumes in-12 of (4)-LVI-(3)-498 pp. ; (4)-503 pp. ; (4)-585 pp. ; (4)-562 pp. ; (4)-533 pp. and (4)-425-(2) pp. ; full contemporary glazed calf, spine ribbed. One or two light spottings, a small tear on one headband, otherwise a very good copy. Interior in excellent condition. Printed in Trévoux Some copies have a frontispiece (portrait of Montaigne): it is not in ours. 4th edition given by Coste, the best. Attested printing of Trévoux with foreign address. "Volume VI contains La servitude volontaire, the Preface by Mademoiselle de Gournay, his dedication to Richelieu, the summary of Montaigne's life, his letters, the judgments and criticisms, the analytical table. For the first time, we find the life of Montaigne by President Bouhier and La servitude volontaire. These are the additions that were printed the following year and that make up the quarto supplement. Good and beautiful edition. (Payen).
