DU BOYS (Albert) & CASSIEN (Victor). Album...
One large volume in-4, contemporary half-black chagrin, smooth spine decorated. 2 ff. 272 pp. First edition and first printing of this essential classic on the Vivarais region. Bergeron's lithographs, based on drawings by Victor Cassien, are quite faithful. They accurately reflect the appearance of the Vivarais during the Romantic period, as confirmed by the descriptions of Prosper Mérimée and other travelers discovering this province at the same time. 40 (of 41) hors-texte lithographed plates. "If we can't stop the hammer of demolition, whose ravages speculation and false taste never cease to unleash, let us at least fix on paper what still remains of the architecture of ancient times in our modern France, so forgetful or so ignorant of its own riches" [Preface]. Worn binding, copy uncropped, light foxing.
