[Velay]. ROMAINS (Jules). Cromedeyre-le-Vieil. Illustration - Lot 166
[Velay]. ROMAINS (Jules). Cromedeyre-le-Vieil. Illustrations by Pierre Favier, woodcut by Jacques Jubert. Aux dépens de l'Artiste, 1964. In-4 leaves in filled cover and orange cloth-lined slipcase. 2 ff., 169 pp. 27 illustrations including 5 in color hors-texte by Pierre FAVIER. Deluxe edition limited to 200 copies. This is one of the 30 first copies including four original drawings (only one announced in the justification) and a suite of illustrations on Johannot pur fil. The original drawings, all signed by the artist, depict Velay peasants: three figures at the table (pencil and India ink, reproduced on p. 115) and 3 drawings not chosen for the book illustration (two in pencil and one in pencil and India ink). Enclosed is a letter in which the illustrator explains that the 5 full-page color illustrations required up to 12 woodcuts for a single plate; he writes to his interlocutor that he has only 2 head copies left (including this one, which the addressee of the letter acquired on receipt) and informs him that he won the "Prix des Volcans" for his illustrations. Small 2 cm crack to slipcase, otherwise a fine copy.
