[original drawings] DRANER: set of caricature drawings publi - Lot 51
[original drawings] DRANER: set of caricature drawings published in satirical magazines, including Charivari. DRANER (also known as PAT), whose real name was Jules Renard, 1833-1926, was a Belgian illustrator, painter and caricaturist. Between 1861 and 1900, he contributed to a number of Parisian illustrated journals: Le Charivari, L'Éclipse, Paris-Comique, L'Illustration, Le Monde Illustré and Le Journal pour rire. Portfolio of 41 sheets, 27 by 35.5 cm. In a soft cover, titled in pen and ink. On these sheets, we find: 8 sheets, each with 3 sets of two illustrations: the original ink drawing, and the final printed drawing, cut from the newspaper that published it. 24 sheets with only originals, in pencil or ink (4 to 6 originals per sheet). Some drawings are abandoned or crossed out. Texts are reworked, with cross-outs. This gives a vivid picture of the delicate work of a caricaturist sketching an era. 8 pages taken from the Charivari, News section, with accompanying sketches and preparatory drawings. We see how the texts evolve, and how a small sketch is transformed into a large, highly decorated page. 1 page with a header for the Paris Nocturne New Year's Eve, and the preparatory drawing of the two pigs. All in very good condition. In all, over 130 original drawings, most of which were published (dates indicated) in Charivari. A unique set for collectors...
