[Manuscript] A set of 12 autograph letters signed by Pierre - Lot 92
[Manuscript] A set of 12 autograph letters signed by Pierre LOTI:
7 letters of 4 pages, 11 by 16 cm, edged in black, all dated 1897.
3 letters of 4 pages, 14 by 12 cm, edged in black, all dated 1897.
2 letters, 21 by 13.5 cm, one of 2 pages, the other of 4, on the letterhead of Commandant de la Chaloupe canonnière Le Javelot, En mission dans la "Bidassoa", Bord (Hendaye): Dated 1897. Also bordered in black.
Julien VIAUD (Pierre LOTI) was appointed commander of Le Javelot for the second time between April 1896 and November 1897.
All these letters are addressed to a Dear Friend, to whom Loti asks for strategic advice on his play Judith RENAUDIN (contact with critics, theater directors), shares his discouragement (he received a negative review of his play, and this affects him all the more as it has a personal dimension: his family was Protestant, and the play recounts the fate of his great aunt, Julie Renaudin, among other things). And asks to buy her some ties...
Judith RENAUDIN was finally presented in 1898 at the Théâtre Antoine, and was a great success...
In a letter, a copy of the incendiary review he received, advising him against presenting his play, and criticizing the plot (unsigned).
The "Dear Friend" could be Jean THOREL, according to the origin of these letters.
Letters in perfect condition (except for a missing corner on the one-page letter Le Javelot), all very legible and signed.
A coherent and rare set, a fine testimony to Pierre LOTI.
