[Manuscript] A postcard showing the two profiles of RAMSES I - Lot 93
[Manuscript] A postcard showing the two profiles of RAMSES II, mummified in 1258 B.C., and of himself, non-mummified in 1910 A.D., very similar profiles. The card, again addressed to a Dear Friend (Jean THOREL?), acknowledges receipt of a book... LOTI believed in reincarnation. He liked to think of himself as the reincarnation of Ramses II, and offered this card to a few friends, with words that varied according to the date of the print: Sesostris disembodied in 1258 B.C., Loti not yet disembodied in 1910. The card seems to have had three printings, in 1909, 1910 and 1912. Despite this, it remains extremely rare. Loti was fascinated by the preservation of corpses, and "mummified" a large number of small animals himself. Megalomania and humor can go very well together...
