[DÜRER (Albrecht)] BRANT (Sebastian): Das Narrenschiff. Strasburg (Strasbourg), Mathys HUPPFUFF, 1507. One volume. 13 by 17.5 cm. Bound in later cloth, with calligraphic title on spine (with incorrect date). Very rare, beautifully illustrated edition of Sébastien BRANT's NEF DES FOUS, given by the great printer Matthias HUPPFUFF. But a defective copy: only 87 leaves of the 163 making up the work, plus one incomplete leaf with a handwritten addition, plus one handwritten leaf. Each leaf is illustrated with two woodcut headbands, with repeated motifs. And the copy presented here features 44 woodcuts (plus 1 incomplete). Very good overall condition, with a few minor defects (very rare foxing, small amount of wetness at the top of a few leaves, a few leaves detached). The creators of the woodcuts are identified as Hauptmeister, Haintz-Nar-Meister, and Gnad-her-Meister. Albrecht DÜRER is likely to have been the Haupmeister of this edition, having lived in Basel during this period. HUPPFUFF's first edition of La Nef des Fous dates from 1506, and was published in Basel... This illustration is therefore often attributed to him.
