ALCIAT (André): D. Alciati Emblemata denuo ab ipso autore re - Lot 118
ALCIAT (André): D. Alciati Emblemata denuo ab ipso autore recognita, ac, quae desiderabantur, imaginibus locupletata... Lugduni [Lyon], apud Gulielmum Rouillium [Guillaume Rouille], 1564. One volume.
10.5 by 18.5 cm. 226-(5) pages. Full 18th century marbled fawn basane, spine with 3 ornate nerves, blond title page. One box missing. Title page artfully restored, but missing. Paper sometimes slightly browned. Despite this, a good copy.
220 emblems. One of the most complete editions of this famous book of emblems, enriched with new emblems compared to the edition published by the same authors in 1549. Almost all the emblems are set in Renaissance-style frames, engraved by Pierre de Vingle or Pierre Eskrich, known as Pierre Vase. The small engraved figures are by Bernard Salomon (Brunet I, 148).
A fascinating work... the pictorial and symbolic richness of the 16th century continues to dazzle us.
