Very good condition. 3rd report. First edition. Chwartz M: 29. Antoine-Fortuné Marion, from the Faculty of Sciences in Marseille, member of the higher commission on phylloxera, headed the department of the Comité régional d'action contre le phylloxera (regional committee for action against phylloxera) from 1876, set up in Marseille and financed, on the initiative of its general manager Paulin Talabot, by the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (P.L.M.). Over a period of eight years, the committee conducted field experiments to determine the best practical method for destroying phylloxera. It was thanks to the work of Marion and his colleagues that carbon sulfide was able to establish itself as an insecticide, extending the life of many vines by several years. Between 1876 and 1883, six reports were published by the P.L.M. on the work carried out by this department. They give an account of the experiments carried out and the results obtained during the campaigns of 1876, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880 and 1881, 1882 and 1883. 3. His "greatest success was undoubtedly the Ravat 262 vine, [not described in this book], which gives a light red wine reminiscent of Beaujolais in the United States." (Lichine, Encycl. des vins, p. 613). The first volume contains descriptions of numerous hybrids, with information on their qualities or disadvantages, produced by Seibel, Couderc, Bertille-Seyve, Baco, Malègue and others. The second volume is a plea in favor of hybrids. It includes a description of Ravat 6, the author's best white wine vine (cf. Lichine). Surprisingly, there is also a chapter on dowsing applied to hybridization. 5. AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS FOR FRANCE. Appendix to the 1929 survey. Monographie agricole du département de la Gironde.
