UZANNE (Octave): L'ombrelle - le Gant - le Manchon. Drawings - Lot 215
UZANNE (Octave): L'ombrelle - le Gant - le Manchon. Drawings by Paul AVRIL. Paris, Quantin, 1883. One volume. 17 by 26.5 cm. IV-(4)-139 pages. Light-blue half-maroquin, smooth spine, light-blue silk boards, with an inlay in the boards of a cross-stitch pattern (modern binding). Illustrated covers preserved, in ultramarine blue percaline wrappers. Perfect condition of binding, covers slightly browned, otherwise good condition inside. QUANTIN's layout is as seductive as ever, with each page framed, Paul Avril's drawings intermingled with the text, and varying in color. A precious jewel of 19th-century publishing, in a modern binding that fits like a glove. With UZANNE (Octave): Son altesse la Femme. Paris, Quantin, 1885. One volume. 18 by 26.5 cm. XII-315 pages and 10 color hors-texts. Fir-green morocco, smooth spine, illustrated cover (modern binding). Very good condition. Preserved cover browned, browning on hors-texte, mainly in margins. First edition and first print run of this collection of ten short stories, with 10 color plates and engravings in the text by Henri Gervex, J.-A. Gonzalès, L. Kratke, Albert Lynch, Adrien Moreau and Félicien Rops. The cover features a fine color composition by Gustave Fraipont. Numerous illustrations in the text. The charm of Uzanne's books, alas, altered by the flaws in the 19th-century paper.
