COMTE (Charles): Traité de législation, ou exposition des lois générales suivant lesquelles les peuples prospèrent, dépérissent ou restent stationnaires. Paris, A. Sautelet et Cie, 1826-1827. 4 volumes. 12.5 by 20.5 cm. XIV-527 ; (4)-478 ; (4)-492 and (4)-538 pages. Contemporary half olive calf, smooth spine decorated with romantic irons. One spine cap damaged, otherwise very good condition. Scattered foxing in the text. First edition. Ch. Comte, son-in-law of J.-B. Say, adopted his father-in-law's industrialist and liberal ideas. Along with Dunoyer, he founded the famous liberal journal Le Censeur. This book is his major work. It had a lasting influence on the French liberal school. In particular, it defines the limits of the State's role in economic matters. Volume IV contains a long, detailed analysis of the origin, nature and consequences of slavery.
