"Born in Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-du-Nord) on September 9, 1844; shot at Satory on November 28, 1871. Second Empire officer and one of the Commune's main military leaders. Appointed second lieutenant in Metz in 1864, he attended the engineering school there. Captain on the eve of war, he campaigned in Bazaine's army, arriving in Metz on August 4, 1870 to work on fortifications. On October 29, he tried ardently, but unsuccessfully, to organize a sortie from Metz, and, taken prisoner with his companions on October 28, escaped the same day to reach France, via Luxembourg, Brussels and England." "On March 20, he rushed to Paris to join the Commune, which temporarily entrusted him with the post of War Delegate. He refused to leave Paris after the defeat, was arrested, sentenced to death and executed, despite interventions from all sides. The book includes his account of his participation in the Commune, written in Versailles prison". (Le Quillec).

"Ducrot (Auguste-Alexandre), Nevers, Feb. 24, 1817-Versailles, August 16, 1882. French general. In 1870, took part in the battles of Wœrth and Sedan, was taken prisoner, escaped and, under Trochu, took command of the 2nd Army of Paris. Commander of the 8th Corps at Bourges (1872-78), he plotted a monarchist coup d'état in 1877 with generals de Rochebouët and de Miribel, and was retired after the Republican victory."
