GENSSANE (Antoine de): Natural history of the province of Languedoc. Mineralogical and geoponic part. Montpellier, Rigaud, Pons, 1776-79. 5 volumes. 11.5 by 19 cm. (8)-275-(4); (8)-304-(4); 288-(8); (2)-267-(10); (8)-320 pages, and two folding plates (complete). Contemporary half-basin with corners, smooth spine decorated, havana title-pieces. 5 headpieces worn, small lack of leather at the bottom of the spine of volume 4, small minor defects on 2 spines. Good condition inside. Genssane (d. 1782), a mining engineer, was commissioned by the States of Languedoc to research all deposits of coal and metals, with the recommendation to also indicate the best methods to extract the natural wealth of the soil. He began his explorations in 1775 and his reports were printed as they progressed. Each volume of his Histoire du Languedoc begins with a "preliminary speech", where the author expresses his ideas and theories. It continues with mineralogical descriptions of the country, diocese after diocese. Rare book.
