If this maxim can be applied to any car, it is the Jaguar XJ-S. After the legendary E-Type, which left its mark on 1960s culture as much as it did on car lovers, the next generation is coming. And Jaguar, which always uses its success in competition to develop its sports cars, first thought of a mid-engine architecture. From 1971 onwards and during the years of development, the new Jaguar is waiting and everyone is holding their breath. The presentation in September 1975 was a shock. Fans who had discovered the Type-E's cat-like, avant-garde snout could not believe their eyes. The brand had indeed changed its approach. It is now focusing on comfort, quality and refinement with the XJ-S. Under the aegis of Sir William Lyons, who created so many legends, the best people were involved in the design of this car, including Malcolm Sawyer, who designed the D-Type as well as the E-Type. Although the mid-engine architecture was not retained, the XJ-S is nonetheless powered by an exceptional engine. And what an engine: the only transalpine twelve-cylinder of the time! Unfortunately, the XJ-S suffered from the successive oil crises at its launch and its design, more bourgeois and less sporty than its predecessor, which disconcerted many. The line is sharp and very much in the air of the 1970s, the interior has never been so luxurious and the comfort on the road is imperial. It has never ceased to improve over time, with multiple versions, targa or convertible, twelve or six cylinder engine, not to mention a number of limited series or designed in partnership with the great names of motorsport. The Jaguar XJ-S marked its time and had a long and prosperous career, which only ended in 1996, more than 20 years after its presentation. Our example is a Jaguar XJ-S in convertible version with a particularly desirable line, probably the most beautiful of the range. Indeed, if the coupe line suffered from critics, it was not the case for the convertible which was unanimously considered as one of the most beautiful cars coming out of Coventry. It was delivered new to the USA in 1990, where it had only one owner, a Maine resident, from 2000 to 2019. It now boasts 80000 miles, which can be certified as original thanks to the Carfax system and its condition. The car comes in a beautiful "Diamond Blue Metallic" (JNF) configuration, with blue trim and chrome side strips, "Isis Blue" (JEF) leather interior and blue soft top as well. It is equipped with automatic transmission, beautiful honeycomb wheels, air conditioning, electric seats and steering wheel with airbag. The general condition of the vehicle shows the constant care that has been given to it, as evidenced by the Carfax already mentioned, which details some of the maintenance carried out during its life. The paint, the chrome and the hood have a nice shine. The woodwork is particularly well preserved and the Connolly leather has a sublime patina. The car has recently been imported from the USA: the US registration, the clearance certificate, the FFVE certificate as well as the technical control will be given to the future buyer of this beautiful twelve-cylinder convertible, which is just waiting to be driven on our European roads. The XJS is a car that is constantly being rediscovered as the price of classic cars continues to rise. One thing is for sure: a Jaguar convertible with a V12 engine in good working order is an opportunity that will become increasingly rare. The XJ-S has now become a true darling and no one is indifferent. And the best place to enjoy it is behind the wheel!
