[AUBERY (Jacques): History of the execution... - Lot 97 - Richard Maison de ventes
[AUBERY (Jacques): History of the execution of Cabrieres and Merindol, and other places of Provence, particularly deduced in the plea that was made in the year 1551 () Together a particular relation of what happened to the fifty hearings of the cause of Merindol. Paris, Sébastien and Gabriel Cramoisy, 1645. One volume. 15 by 21 cm. (32)-230-(1) pages. Full varnished calf binding, with an old restoration: the spine has been entirely rebound, and the binding varnished (as was the practice at the time to protect fragile leather). Smooth spine with red title page, gold decoration, triple framing with roulette of the boards, with spandrels. Good interior condition despite a few small defects (wormholes on 30 leaves, discrete and marginal, without loss, rare spotting, slightly browned paper). First French edition of this resounding plea of the jurisconsult Jacques Aubery in the case of President Oppede. It was during this trial that Jacques Aubery, lawyer for King Henry II, succeeded in having Guillaume Guérin, general counsel at the parliament of Aix, reputed for his barbarity during the persecutions against the Waldensians, as well as Oppede, although absolved during the trial, condemned to death as a forger and prevaricator. It was under their orders that the villages of Cabrieres and Mérindol, as well as twenty-four other villages in the Hérault, were burned and their inhabitants massacred. Rare.
