SWIFT (Jonathan): The Tale of the Barrel,... - Lot 156 - Richard Maison de ventes
SWIFT (Jonathan): The Tale of the Barrel, containing all that is most sublime and mysterious in the arts, & sciences (). The Hague, Henry Scheurleer, 1732. Two volumes. 9,5 by 16 cm. Frontispiece-(22)-300-(10); (14)-286-(10) pages. 7 hors-texte engravings in addition to the frontispiece (complete). Full contemporary calf, spine with five raised bands, red title and burgundy gilt. Small defects to the headpieces, a cracked jaw, etc.. Some leaves slightly browned, a small hole in the upper margin of a page. 1st illustrated edition, containing 8 unsigned figures, including the famous "Battle of the Books", and engraved vignettes on the titles and armorial band at the dedication to Baron de Hinojosa. One of the first important works of Swift (1667-1745), very controversial as a satire of religious excesses, with parodies of contemporary English writings on literature, politics, theology, biblical exegesis, etc. A fair copy of a sought-after edition.
