KANDINSKY (Vassily) and MARC (Franz): Der... - Lot 103 - Richard Maison de ventes
KANDINSKY (Vassily) and MARC (Franz): Der Blaue Reiter. Munchen, Piper 1912. 22 by 29 cm. 140 pages, plus 10 pages of advertisements. Full publisher's canvas decorated on the 1st plate with the colour composition of the Blue Rider, by KANDINSKY, and the reproduction of a wood by KANDINSKY in black on the 2nd plate. With four hand-coloured plates: Saint Martin (unattributed, Pferde (horses) watercolour by Franz MARC, Composition N°4, by KANDINSKY, and an Egyptian figure (unattributed). 137 illustrations in reproduction, bringing together the painters who were to give birth to contemporary painting after 1918: Delaunay, Picasso, Matisse, etc. and reproductions of art from all over the world. With eight artist's vignettes. Three folding music plates (SCHONBERG, BERG, WEBERN). Famous and rare almanac of the Der Blaue Reiter movement, which could have had a considerable influence on modern painting, had the war of 1914-1918 not stopped it abruptly. In this almanac, many articles try to found a theory of art, which succeeded Impressionism. What emerges from reading the almanac is the absence of any traditional division between the different artistic techniques: there is at the same time a homogeneity of thought, a common belief in the inner life of the artist, in the form as an exteriorization of the creative intuition of the painter or musician, in the links that unite the new arts with the ancient arts, the European arts with African or Asian arts, learned or popular, links located in the depths of man, in what is most archetypal. The almanac comprises a set of articles of general aesthetics which underline the will of their authors not to lock their thought into an immutable system, but to prove themselves capable of extending and branching out their field of action as far as possible. The notion of vibration, of inner resonance, the only one capable of establishing an authentic vocabulary of correspondences between colours
