SHAW (Thomas): Travels in several provinces... - Lot 107 - Richard Maison de ventes
SHAW (Thomas): Travels in several provinces of the Barbary and Levant, containing geographical, physical, philological and mixed observations on the kingdoms of Algiers and Tunis, on Syria, Egypt and Petra Arabia. The Hague, Jean Neaulme, 1743. 2 volumes in one volume 18.5 by 25 cm. 2]-XLIV-414; IV-192-172 pages. Full period vellum, cold-decorated by a central iron in the centre of the plates, with a border of 2 fillets and fleurons in corners, 6 nerves, titled in ink. Very good condition for this book both from the binding and the inside. First edition in French of this interesting travel report in North Africa and the Near East. It is illustrated with 8 maps, 3 plans and 22 engravings, i.e. 33 plates, plus numerous engravings in the text. The Gallican pastor Thomas Shaw (circa 1692-1751) stayed in Algiers from 1720 to 1732, and travelled all the way to the Levant, which allowed him to gather precious information about geography, arts, natural history and customs. Very nice copy of this travel book, important for the richness of its observations and its illustration.
