[Order of SAINT SEPULCRE HORSEY]. Diploma... - Lot 188 - Richard Maison de ventes
[Order of SAINT SEPULCRE HORSEY]. Diploma of adoubtment of CHEVALIER in the ORDER OF SAINT SEPULCRE OF JERUSALEM IN PALESTINE, granted to Pierre François LAUGIER, by Jacques de LUCA, RP Prior of the Order. 1723. 49 by 67 cm. Vellum entirely handwritten, with a frame and a very beautiful coloured motif at the bottom of the text, with the arms of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Seal in red wax, representing Christ rising from the tomb, in its iron box, in perfect condition. This very rare document has a small tear and is in perfect condition, if not perfect. A diploma from approximately the same period (1737) can be seen at: https://www.ordredusaintsepulcre.fr/page/373744-histoire#autorite_pontificale The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem has its origins in the pious custom of knights who came to be knighted or to renew their adoration on the tomb of Christ, in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. The first written record of such a ritual dates back to 1335, but it is very likely that knights were knighted there as early as the 12th or 13th centuries. The knights of the time wished to show the supreme value they placed on their commitment. This pilgrimage for the knighthood aims to rediscover the purity of the original knightly commitment.
