[Brazil] DENIS (Jean-Ferdinand): Scenes of... - Lot 145 - Richard Maison de ventes
[Brazil] DENIS (Jean-Ferdinand): Scenes of nature in the tropics, and their influence on poetry; followed by Camoens and Jozé Indio. Paris, Louis Janet, 1824. One volume. 12.5 by 20 cm. 1 frontispiece-(4)-IV-516 pages + 1 errata leaf. Contemporary half ochre basane, smooth spine decorated, edges speckled. Paper of the boards rubbed, split of the upper jaw on 5 cm (without affecting the solidity of the book). Rare freckles. Some old notes in ink in the margins, to rectify plant names. First edition. DENIS has been called the founder of Brazilian studies, although he lived in Brazil only from 1817 to 1819. The book deals with the character of the indigenous peoples of Brazil and the Afro-Brazilians, plants, climate, etc. Denis, in the course of his work as a librarian, discovered an astonishing and totally forgotten episode of French and Brazilian history, namely that a delegation of Tupinamba had performed before Henry II and his wife Catherine de Medici in Rouen in 1550. The frontispiece is a portrait of the epic poet Camoëns on his deathbed, assisted by Joze (Jose) Indio, a monk, whose death is recounted in a semi-romantic way in the book. A book that introduces romanticism
