BONNEVILLE (Nicolas de): Of the Spirit of religions. Work promised and necessary to the universal consideration of the friends of the truth. Paris, printing house of the social circle, 1792. One volume. 12 by 19,5 cm. (4)-92-254 pages. Contemporary half-basecloth, smooth spine, black title page. Paper of the boards slightly worn, otherwise very good condition. Very good condition inside. Nicolas de BONNEVILLE, writer and politician, founded in 1790 the Cercle social whose goal is to rally the human race to "this doctrine of love which is the religion of happiness", and whose reports of the Cercle social will be published in the newspaper La Bouche de fer, which will have as collaborators Louis-Sébastien Mercier, Nicolas de Condorcet, and Thomas Paine. In De l'esprit des religions, published in 1792, he tries to solve the question of social happiness by proposing a universal religion which would have philosophers and scientists as priests. He works in parallel for the abolition of the Catholic religion. His freedom of thought will cost him dear during the revolution, then during the Empire. An active Freemason, BONNEVILLE was a friend of Louis-Claude de SAINT-MARTIN (the Unknown Philosopher), whose closest disciple he claimed to be (Wikipedia).
