ANGO (Pierre): Optics divided in three books... - Lot 160 - Richard Maison de ventes
ANGO (Pierre): Optics divided in three books where one demonstrates in an easy way all that concerns 1°. the propagation & the properties of the light. 2°. the vision. 3°. the figure & the disposition of the glasses which are used to perfect it. Paris, Etienne Michallet, 1682. One volume. 8,5 by 15,5 cm. (8)-367-(1) pages. Full contemporary basane, spine with 5 ornate nerves. Covers torn off, small lack of leather at the bottom of the spine. Some foxing, paper slightly foxed. Nevertheless a very decent copy for this rare book. First edition. 38 figures in-text. The Jesuit Father Ango published his theory of the propagation of light by waves eight years before Huygens' treatise on light. He acknowledges having used an unpublished manuscript of the Jesuit Father Pardiès, as did Huygens. The third part (pp. 256-367) deals with the correction of sight by glasses with long developments on lenses, microscopes and telescopes.
