Brussels, 1779, one volume. 18,5 by 25,5 cm. XIV-776 pp. + 1 f. of errata + 1 f. numbered 71bis-72bis after page 72. Full contemporary calf, spine with five raised bands, decorated caissons, red title page. Ex-libris with the arms of Dionys Franc. Secousse. Ex-libris of LeMoyne de Grandpré in pen on the title page. Various defects on the binding: a crushed corner, cracks of 6 cm and 4 cm on a spine, small wear on the first board, damaged top cover. A very decent copy nevertheless, despite this frightening list. Very good condition inside. First edition. The Memoirs written by Auger on the Cour des Aides expose and comment, with supporting texts, from 1756 to 1776, the financial events of the last twenty years of the reign: establishment, extension and doubling of the vingtièmes, projects of general subsidy, Monnerat affair, suppression of the privileges of the tailles, etc. The work also includes the remonstrances written by the councillor le Moine de la Clartière and by Malesherbes, who was the first President of this Court from 1768 to 1776. These remonstrances denounced the complicity of the tax administration, the abuses of the fermiers généraux, criticized the judicial procedures, the keeping of the prisons, the letters of seal. Malesherbes, unable to reform, resigned in 1776.
