BÉLIDOR (Bernard Forest de): La Science des ingénieurs dans la conduite des travaux de fortification et d'architecture civile dedicated to the King. Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1739. One volume. 21 by 28 cm. Engraved frontispiece-(16)-80-64-96-104-80-80-(8) pages, and 53 hors-texte plates (complete), mostly folding. Full contemporary calf, spine with 5 raised bands, decorated caissons, red title page. Binding damaged (missing headpieces, corners damaged, boards scratched). Scattered foxing, and a few light spots in the body of the book, one engraving with a tear in the margin without missing. A poor copy, but complete. Third edition of this important treatise on the construction of fortifications, whose 6 parts deal with the mechanics of coverings, the mechanics of vaults, masonry, military buildings, decoration, and specifications. Bernard Forest de Bélidor (1698-1761), a French military and later civil engineer, was a professor of artillery and general inspector of miners in France.
