[Denmark]). SAXO GRAMMATICUS: Historia Danica.... - Lot 199 - Richard Maison de ventes
[Denmark]). SAXO GRAMMATICUS: Historia Danica. Recensuit et commentarius illustravit Dr. Petrus Erasmus Müller. Opus morte Mülleri interruptum absolvit Mag. Joannes Matthias Velschow. Havniae, Sumtibus Librariae Guldendalianae, Typis Brünnichianis, 1839-1858. 2 volumes. 16.5 by 24.5 cm. XII-1033; (4)-(1 f. of title Pars posterior, 1858)-XCIX-(1)-387-(1) pp. + 5 folding plates h.t. Contemporary half tan basane with corners, spines decorated, red titles and headpieces. Upper spine rubbed (not severe), corners dulled. Scattered freckles, small navy blue ink stains in the ext. margin of the last 30 ff. of volume 1 (not serious). Good critical edition, with notes, given by P.E. Müller and H.M. Velschow. The first edition was edited by Kristiern Pedersen and printed by Badius in Paris in 1514. Of the author, SAXO, we only know that he was clericus (secretary) to the archbishop of Lund, Absalon. Saxo himself tells that his father and grandfather had served King Valdemar as warriors. There is every reason to believe that Saxo completed his work in about 1208. Historia Danica consists of sixteen books, the first nine of which are devoted to the legendary history of Denmark, from the time of King Dan, who lived more than a thousand years before Christ, to the time of Gorm the Elder (who died in 936 AD). Book X covers the period from Harald-at-the-Blue-Tooth to Magnus-the-Good; Books XI to XIII cover the time of Sven Estriden and his sons; Book XIV covers the period between the accession of Erik Emune and the elevation of Absalon to the archbishopric (1178); book XV the last years of the reign of King Valdemar the Great (died 1182); book XVI, finally, the first years of the reign of King Knud (Canut) VI until the submission of Pomerania, in about 1185."
