HOWEL (Thomas): Journey back from India,... - Lot 206 - Richard Maison de ventes
HOWEL (Thomas): Journey back from India, by land, and by a hitherto partly unknown route. Followed by Observations on the passage into India by Egypt and the great desert, by James Capper. Translated from the English by Théophile Mandar. Paris, Imprimerie de la République, An V [1796]. One volume. 19 by 26 cm. (4)-XVI-385-(2) pages + 2 folding maps h.t. Contemporary blue bradel boards (expertly restored). Staining in the lower margin of 3/4 of the leaves, including the maps. Some foxing. First edition in French. The Englishman Thomas Howel retraces his journey from Madras to Constantinople, which will lead him through Persia and Arabia. He gives interesting details about Armenia, Anatolia, Kurdistan. Th. Mandar, the translator, wrote a copious appendix where he describes Maduré, the coast of Malabars and Coromandel, Cochin, Baghdad, Bassora, Babylon... Capper's work is composed of two parts: a letter from James Capper describing his journey to India via the Red Sea and Egypt, and a travel journal from India to Aleppo. A classic of travel books, not very common
