MILTON (Jean) : Eikonoklasté, or answer to... - Lot 266 - Richard Maison de ventes
MILTON (Jean) : Eikonoklasté, or answer to the book entitled Eikôn Basilikè : or the Pourtrait of his Sacred Majesty during his solitude and his sufferings. Translated from English on the second and larger edition; and revised by the author. To which are added various pieces, mentioned in the said answer, for the reader's greater convenience. London, Guill. Du-Gard, and sold by Nicolas Bourne, 1652. One volume. 8 by 13 cm. (32)-451-(28) pages. Slightly later full calf, smooth spine decorated, red title page. Some leaves slightly faded. The faux-title bears: Answer to the book of the late King of England during his solitude. First edition in French (E.O. in English: 1649). Ten days after the execution of Charles I (30-01-1649) memoirs attributed to the king began to be sold. This book, the Eikon Basilike (Greek for "Royal Portrait") included an apologia ("apology") for the royal policies and proved to be an effective propaganda tool for the royalist cause. His chamber boy swore that he had personally seen the king write the Eikon Basilike, but historians debate the veracity of this claim. To counter this propaganda, Parliament commissioned John Milton, the great poet and admirer of Cromwell, to write a response, the Eikonoklastes ("Iconoclast"). A rare book, a great political testimony of a troubled time.
