[DUPRÉ DE SAINT-MAUR (Nicolas-François): Essai sur les monnoies, ou réflexions sur le rapport entre l'argent et les denrées. Paris, Jean-Baptiste Coignard and Du Bure, l'Aîné, 1746. 2 parts in 1 volume. 19 by 24,8 cm. XXI-(3)-220 pages + 1 folding table h.t.; 188 pages. Full contemporary calf, spine with ornate nerves. Two very small epidermal marks on the 2nd plate, the only mentionable defect. A very nice copy. First edition. "Nicolas-François Dupré de Saint-Maur was a member of the French Academy at the age of 38. In the field of economics, he led, among other things, a gigantic undertaking to estimate the evolution of food prices since the beginning of Christendom, work which earned him the praise of Adam Smith, who quoted him several times in Riches of Nations." (Bormans). The second part of the book traces the history of medieval currencies and specifies the evolution of the prices of various commodities, including wheat, over a long period (from the 13th to the 18th century).
