Antwerp, Balthasar Moretus's Plantinian Printing House, 1638. One volume. 15 by 19,5 cm. (16)-313-(25) pagers. Allegorical title-frontispiece engraved in intaglio by C. Galle and a folding plan showing the fortifications and the siege of the city. Antwerp, Balthasar Moretus, 1638. 22 pages. With a plan of the siege of the royal fortress of Bremen. Full posterior vellum with cover, with laces, in perfect condition. Mild foxing in the text (the work has probably been professionally washed). Small minor losses in the upper margin of the 1st leaf. The three engravings are of an excellent edition. Second edition, after the original published in Dole the year before. Jean Boyvin was a counselor at the Parliament of Dole, at the time of the French offensive, launched in May 1636. This one was a failure, at least immediately: the troops led by Henri de Bourbon-Condé had to lift the siege on August 15 in front of the courageous resistance of the people of Dole, who were decimated by the plague. It was not until the second siege of Louis XIV, led by Vauban in 1674, that the city became definitively French. Rare book.
