Leiden, Jean Sambix le jeune, 1666-1666. 2 volumes bound in one volume. 7,5 by 13 cm. (8)-424; 504 pages. Full vellum, boards with overlays, titled in ink on the spine. Binding previously restored (two cuts and part of the spine reconstructed, endpapers changed). Last page of volume 2 slightly rubbed on 8 lines in the inner margin, with loss of some characters. Browning in the corner on the first 5 leaves (not serious). Otherwise a very good copy. Edition published the same year as the original, printed by Blaeu in Amsterdam. Our copy is published by Jean Sambix, a pseudonym used first by the Leiden printer-booksellers Daniel and Johannes Elzevier, then by booksellers close to the Elzeviers. La vie des Dames galantes is the best known and most widely read work of Brantôme, from which he got his reputation as a licentious author. With a very free tone, it reveals itself as much as an erotic text as a feminist, faithful description of the morals of his time, without any moralizing dimension.
