[armored binding] [fortifications] GROOTE...
Munich, Anna Berghin, 1617. One volume. 22 by 35,3 cm. (10)-294 pages (miscalculated 286), A frontispiece and 43 engraved plates hors-texte, 33 of them double-page (complete). Full contemporary calf, spine with six raised bands, with a fleuron in each box, double fillet framing the boards, arms of Léonor d'Estampes de Valençay in the center of the boards. Heads missing, corners and edges sometimes slightly worn. Despite this, a beautiful binding. Title page formerly restored, without missing, traces of moisture on the last 5 leaves, a small paper loss in the margin of an engraving, without missing, and a tear in the margin of another, again without missing. Otherwise, good condition inside. First edition of this unusual book. The author defends the suppression of the method of fortification by bastions (metodo di fortificare alla reale), to which the author attributes the weak defensive capacity of the places. Jordan, 1515. Marini, p. 64. Cockle, 808. Copy of Léonor d'Estampes de Valençay (1589-1651), with abbatial iron pushed into the center of the boards (OHR 1663-3), which makes it possible to date the possession to before 1620, the date on which the young man was elevated to the see of Chartres, and thus took his episcopal arms. Overloaded with commendatory abbeys, he was then archbishop of Reims (from 1641 to his death). The work later passed into the library of Shirburn Castle, of the Earls of Macclesfield, with an ex-libris vignette pasted on the first endpapers.
