BARONIO (César, Cardinal) and SPONDE (Henry... - Lot 153 - Richard Maison de ventes
BARONIO (César, Cardinal) and SPONDE (Henry de, Bishop): The body of sacred and ecclesiastical annals containing all that has happened of memorable in the Church & in the Empires & Kingdoms, since the creation of the world until now. Put in French by Pierre COPPIN, (). Second edition. Paris, Jacques d'Allin, 1655. One volume. Frontispice-(24)-530-(60) pages. Followed by : SPONDE (Henry de, Bishop): Abrégé des Annales écclésiatiques de l'Eminentissime Cardinal Baronius. Paris, Jacques d'Allin, 1655. Four volumes in two volumes. Paris, Jacques d'Allin, 1654. 3 volumes. (16)-754-(66); (2)-766-(51); (2)-760-30-(59) pages. 6 volumes in total (complete), with a single 6-volume tome. 22 by 36 cm. Full period binding, 6-ribbed spine, ornate boards. Bindings with numerous small defects: worn corners, spotting on the boards, but no major defects. Some foxing. Volume 2 with some spotting. Very small wormhole in a few pages of the table of volume 1. César BARONIO wants, by his work, to incite to a meditation allowing to deepen his religious faith, and, accessorily, to counter Protestantism. But as soon as it was published, this historical collection of all the Christian facts worthy of interest was to serve as a mine of information for all the hagiographies and pious legends that the Church would spread for centuries. Despite its importance, it is rare to find this work with all the extensions made by Henry de Sponde. Well complete of the supplement which covers from 1640 to 1654, written by COPPIN.
