CATELLAN (Jean de): The antiquities of the... - Lot 159 - Richard Maison de ventes
CATELLAN (Jean de): The antiquities of the church of Valence. With reflections on what is most remarkable in these antiquities. Recüeillies par M. Jean de Catellan, évêque & Comte de Valence, pour l'instruction & l'édification du clergé & du peuple de son diocèse. Valence, Jean Gilibert, 1724. One volume. 19 by 24 cm. (6)-366-(2) pages. Half calf of the 19th century, smooth spine very nicely decorated. Slight insolation on the second cover (discreet), otherwise perfect condition of the binding. A bookplate in ink and a stamp of former ownership on the title page, otherwise very good condition inside. First edition. Beautiful vignette by Le Clerc engraved by Audran in the first book. Jean de Catellan, reader of the Duke of Berry in 1683, preceptor of the Children of France, was appointed bishop of Valence in 1705 and remained so until his death in 1725. The work traces the history of the church of Valence from the second century to the thirteenth and analyzes the various councils held in this city, notably the third. "By order of the Emperor Lothaire, a council was held in Valence on January 8, 855, to judge the bishop of this city for several crimes (etc.)"
