[FREEDOM OF THE PRESS] A collection of 17... - Lot 272 - Richard Maison de ventes
[FREEDOM OF THE PRESS] A collection of 17 factitious papers concerning the freedom of the press. Paris, 1817-1822; Two volumes. 12 by 20 cm. Multiple paginations (see details below). Full brown contemporary basane, smooth spine with romantic decorations, roulette on the edges. Superficial spotting on the boards, otherwise very good condition. Two issues with light corner staining, not serious, otherwise perfect condition. In February 1817, the Chamber of Deputies voted the extension of the censorship regime for newspapers and periodicals until January 1, 1818. In November 1817, Pasquier asked for its extension for a further three years, and with difficulty obtained only the 1819 deadline. The liberals naturally campaigned around these themes, hence the abundance of debate. Our set includes the following titles, of very unequal importance in pagination: Réflexions sur le projet de loi concernant la liberté de la presse, présenté à la Chambre des Députés, par M. le Garde-des-Sceaux, le 17 novembre 1817. Paris, L'Huillier, 1817, [4]-27 pp. - CONSTANT (Benjamin) : Questions on the current legislation of the press in France, and on the doctrine of the public prosecutor's office, relative to the seizure of writings, and to the responsibility of authors and printers. Paris, marchands de nouveautés, 1817, [4]-99-[2] pp. with one blank page. First edition, printed in 1000 copies. Courtney, 22a. COMTE (François-Charles-Louis): Du Nouveau projet de loi sur la presse. Paris, bureau du Censeur européen, 1817, [2]-79 pp. The pamphlet still dates from the agitated and liberal period of the political life of the lawyer Comte (1782-1837); it was before his marriage to the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Say (in 1818) considerably softened his ideas... Causeries des salons sur la liberté de la presse. Paris, L'Huillier, Delaunay, 1817, [4]-185 pp. BOISSY D'ANGLAS (François-Antoine): Collection of speeches on the freedom of the press, published in various legislative assemblies and at various times. Paris, Mongie, Delaunay, 1817, [2]-II-116 pp. MONTVERAN (Tournachon de): De la Législation anglaise sur le libelle, la presse et les journaux. Paris, Alexis Eymery, 1817, VIII-120 pp. [AGOULT DE BONNEVAL (Loup-Joseph-Mathieu d'): Essay on the legislation of the press. By the author of Lettres à un Jacobin. Paris, Adrien Egron, November 1817, 55 pp. The author was a former bishop of Pamiers (1786-1801), and specialized under the Restoration in economic and social questions. Paris, Plassan, 1818, 8 pp. [RICARD D'ALLAUCH:] A last word on the press and the jury, by Mr. R.D. Paris, Brissot-Thivars, 1820, [4]-LXVIII-81 pp. Pronouncement on the law of repression of the offences of the press, in February 1822; in the Chamber of Peers. [Paris], Chassaignon, s.d.
