MARC (Charles-Chrétien-Henri): De la Folie, considérée dans ses rapports avec les questions médico-judiciaires. Paris, J.B. Baillère, and London, H. Baillère, 1840. Two volumes. 13.5 by 22 cm. XXXIII-(1)-560 ; (4)-738 pages. Publisher's full brown percaline, printed spine and boards. Perfect condition of binding. Very good condition inside (one slightly darkened section in volume 2, very rare foxing). MARC, a famous psychiatrist, was first physician to King Louis-Philippe in 1830, and was elected to the Académie de Médecine. As a court expert, Marc made a name for himself as a specialist in monomania, a concept he borrowed from Jean-Étienne Esquirol and continued to develop, describing the symptoms of various forms of obsession. He is also credited with defining the concepts of "kleptomania" and "pyromania". He was a regular contributor to the Annales d'hygiène publique et de médecine légale. In 1797, along with Cabanis and Pinel, he founded the Société Médicale d'Emulation. De la folie is considered the first work of forensic medicine devoted to the insane.
