LONGUS: Les amours pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé. S.l., , sn, 1745. One volume; 15.3 by 20 cm. Frontispiece-(10)-159-XX pages, and 29 hors-texte figures (complete). Full contemporary red morocco, boards framed with triple gilt fillet, richly ornamented smooth spine, black title page, all edges gilt, roulette on bowl and inner frame. Very good condition for this binding. A few scattered freckles (not serious), a small hole in the margin of one page, a small stain on another, for completeness. Otherwise, very good condition inside. The illustration consists of a title-frontispiece engraved by Benoît Audran after Antoine Coypel, and dated 1718, 29 hors-texte figures (including 28 by Audran after Philippus, and the anonymous plate known as "aux petits pieds"), 4 headpieces and 4 headpieces by Cochin. Reprint on Hollande of the "Du Régent" edition, with the addition of a 29th engraving (an erotic engraving known as "les petits pieds"), found in only a few copies of the 1718 first printing. There are 2 formats for this edition: the current edition in in-8 format and the reprinted edition in in-4 format. This copy is one of the few to be reprinted in in-4 format (very wide margins), complete with frontispiece dated 1718, title page dated 1745 and supplemented with Lancelot's notes.
