A Piqûre de Marseille embroidered foot cover from the late 1 - Lot 107
A Piqûre de Marseille embroidered foot cover from the late 17th century. Fine back-stitch embroidery of pressed cordonnets between two layers of Levantine or Indian cotton. Mannerist design of Indian flowers, horns of plenty and two monogrammed vase spandrels surmounted by a marquis's crown (unidentified). Three-sided ruffles of muslin from India embroidered in chain stitch (a few small holes). During the period of prohibition of painted canvases (1686-1759), Marseille stitching was also banned in the kingdom, as were the indiennes to which it was assimilated, due to the cotton from the Levant on which it was made. Fine condition. 77 cm x 101 cm and 7 cm of ruffles.
