"Staël-Holstein (Erik Magnus, Baron de) (1749 - 1802). Swedish. Military career from 1766. Attached to Paris, 1778, where he became chargé d'affaires, minister plenipotentiary, ambassador, 1783 and where, for twenty years, he was to deploy a diplomatic activity and finally die. Highly favored by Queen Marie-Antoinette, he was no less sympathetic to the liberal principles of the French Revolution of 1789, but Gustav III, hostile to these same ideas, recalled him in 1792, and appointed him ambassador to Copenhagen, where his mission was short-lived. On the death of Gustav III in 1795, the Regent of Sweden, the Duke of Sudermanie, sent Baron de Staël-Holstein back to Paris. As the only representative of a monarchy to the French Republic, he was charged with making the following declaration before the Convention: "I have come on behalf of the King of Sweden, within the national representation of France, to pay a resounding tribute to the natural and imprescriptible rights of nations". Nevertheless, he was recalled in 1799 by Gustavus Adolphus, who had come of age. His duties thus came to an end, but he decided to join Mme de Staël in Switzerland, and died in Poligny before reaching the border." (Dict. diplomatique V-pp. 1050-1051).
