[theater][fashion][GAVARNI] Musée de Costumes. Paris, ed. Au - Lot 68
[theater][fashion][GAVARNI] Musée de Costumes. Paris, ed. Aubert, Galerie Véro-Dodat. Circa 1840. 16 by 25.2 cm. 60 color plates (one in duplicate). Contemporary black half-maroquin, smooth spine adorned with romantic irons, black percaline boards titled in the center, with double cold framing of the boards. Minor rubbing at top and bottom of spine, otherwise good condition. A few plates have minor soiling in the margins, but the overall quality remains good. The 60 plates represent almost all stage costumes, with roles, plays, actors and theaters specified on most of them. In this respect, they are rarer than the regional or national costumes published after 1850 under the title Musée Cosmopolite-Musée de Costumes by the same publisher (formerly Aubert). Most plates are gummed, and in fine color. Some plates are signed GAVARNI (or G), often upside down, and numbered from 1 to 123. They are probably mainly a selection made by the publisher from the series of 106 lithographs by Gavarni of the Musée de Costumes published by Aubert, galerie Véro-Dodat, between 1830 and 1840.
