Brittany, 16th century - Lot 108
Brittany, 16th century The Trinity or Throne of Grace Carved granite fort-relief with traces of polychromy Minor wear and accidents H: 50 - W: 25 - D: 25 cm The dogma of the Trinity, instituted in 325 at the Council of Nicaea, is the very foundation of Christian life. Christian life. In 1334, a Feast of the Trinity established by Pope John XXII gave new impetus to Trinitarian and led to the creation of numerous places of worship dedicated to the Trinity. This cult spread especially in Brittany and eastern France in Lorraine, Burgundy and Franche-Comté from the late 15th to the 17th century. Among the various variants the Throne of Grace, as evidenced by our sculpture: God the Father, wearing the papal tiara is seated on a throne and presents the cross on which his Son is nailed. A dove, symbol of the Holy of the Holy Spirit, here barely visible, glides from his beard towards Christ's head. This iconography of the Throne of Grace materializes the text from the Epistle to the Hebrews (4, 16): "Jesus, the Son of God, was tested in every way, after our likeness, but without sin. sinless. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to be helped in due time." Indicative values and/or information provided by Cabinet Lacroix Jeannest
