ALIX AYMÉ (1894-1989) - Lot 50
ALIX AYMÉ (1894-1989) Lacquer and eggshell panel "Pietà Signed lower right Alix Aymé Label on reverse. The A of Alix illegible. Size 54 x 43.5 cm Alix Aymé developed her taste for travel at an early age, inspired by her parents and her own experiences. Ambitious, inquisitive and sociable, she is an artist whose open-mindedness and talent shine through in each of her works. Her apprenticeship with renowned artists such as Desvallière and, above all, her master Maurice Denis, an eminent member of the Nabis group, and the study of various techniques during her many trips to Asia, forged her style, which is as singular as it is aesthetic. The themes addressed in his works are varied, with a predilection for representations of Asian women and children, and highly personal reinterpretations of piétas. The pietà presented in the sale adopts a frontal composition: the Virgin in prayer, surrounded by two young women gathered around Christ, expresses a silent, spiritual and meditative sorrow. Yet the faces remain peaceful, the suffering interiorized and suggested. The golden background, against which the four figures stand out, illuminates the composition and reveals its mystical dimension. The technical treatment in gold lacquer, polychrome and eggshell inlays lends the whole a singular aesthetic, where the image of compassion takes on a universal significance.
