CHARLETON (Walter) Exercitationes pathologicae, in quibus morborum pene omnium natura, generatio, & caussae. London, Tho. Newcomb, 1661. One volume in-4, full speckled calf, spine ribbed and decorated, (12) ff. 208 pp. (notebook Y is duplicated). Two corners worn, snagged headband.
First edition.
Walter Charleton's (1620-1707) most successful work, with which he introduced Gassendi's atomism to 17th-century England. It is a dissertation that attempts to explain the causes of disease and deals with the problem of abnormal embryonic development; Charleton attempts to explain the phenomenon by invoking atomism, vitalism and Harvey's (Norman) theory of epigenesis.
