Third edition. Henri Dagonet (1823-1902) was chief physician at the Stephansfeld asylum in Alsace, then associate professor at the Strasbourg Faculty of Medicine, in charge of teaching mental and nervous diseases. In 1867, he was appointed head physician of the men's division of the Parisian Sainte-Anne asylum when it opened; with Prosper Lucas, Valentin Magnan and Gustave Bouchereau, he organized practical teaching open to the public outside the asylum, which was the subject of a virulent press campaign leading to its suspension. The lessons he gave in Strasbourg are at the origin of this book. Rejecting Morel's etiological classification, he relied on the one accepted by alienists (adopted in particular by Baillarger and Esquirol). This classification is based on clinical observation and symptomatology. This third edition has been thoroughly revised, making it a "new work". The book was a great success. Magnan quotes it as follows: "now a classic, widely used not only in France but also abroad, it has served as a guide for several generations of physicians; magistrates, in their turn, and administrators draw on it for valuable information." Bold stamp from the library of Dr. Roberto da Costa, Fundacion "Mater Dei".
