[manuscript] [Navy] [Empire] Miscellaneous notices 1809. One - Lot 282
[manuscript] [Navy] [Empire] Miscellaneous notices 1809. One volume. Manuscript memorandum drawn up by a master shipbuilder. One volume in-4, full period paper, spine detached, boards rubbed. Very good condition inside. 206 pp.
This manuscript comprises a series of texts designed to facilitate the work of a boatbuilder: techniques, reminders, copies of regulatory obligations, etc. It is undoubtedly a shipbuilder's aide-mémoire, compiled over the years from his own experience. A few pages in Italian, probably relating to the Castellammare shipyards. It includes, among others:
- Usage du compas de proportion pour trouver avec précision la longueur et grosseur des cordages, mats, et vergues, et les dimensions des voiles de tout bateau.
- Tables of mizzen mast ropes
- Of the fougue parrot
- Hune mainmast
- Parrot and foresail mainmast, etc.
- Table of mast proportions. Statement of supplies required for three months' campaign, for one hundred men.
- Grands Forges workshop - labor estimate.
- List of all irons used in shipbuilding.
- Estimate for the 110-gun English vessel La Ville de Paris.
- Estimate for the 74-gun Ulm vessel.
- Spare pulleys for a three-deck vessel, 80 and 74 guns.
- Proportions of pulleys...
- Nails for dunettes
- Quantities and qualities of anchors required for a ship.
- General rules for maturing Empire vessels of any rank.
- Proportion of the mature of the vessel Le Majestueux.
- Dimensions of some twenty types of vessels, from large ships to barques, corvettes, chebecks, paliottes, etc.
This craftsman's compendium is infinitely precious, given the precision it gives of all the stages in shipbuilding at the very beginning of the 19th century. Each part has its name, size, weight and circumference, as required, from sails to nails.
An invaluable document for sailboat historians...
