5 19th century books on Northern European countries, bound: - Lot 35
5 19th century books on Northern European countries, bound: 1. HALDAN de KNÜDEN: 15th-century Danish manuscript. Paris, A. Sautelet et Cie, 1827. One volume. 10 by 15.5 cm. 241 pages. Modern brown half-chagrin, 5-rib spine, cover boards preserved. Binding in good condition, covers slightly soiled, some foxing, most prominent on the first 3 leaves. First edition. Rare. F. de Jessen, Bibliographie de la littérature française relative au Danemark, p. 120. "This is a novel of the imagination. The prefaces could perhaps give the idea that the author wanted to write a political roman à clef, as so many appeared under the reign of Charles X; but the text of the work does not seem to justify this supposition. Certain geographical and historical details make it clear that the author is not completely unaware of Denmark, although the names of people and places are disguised, whether deliberately or not. The same is true of the story, set in the 16th century, but having borrowed part of its setting from high Norse antiquity; it's not always clear whether the author intended to write a parody or to be taken seriously. It is not certain that any copies of this work exist without the words 'Second Edition' on the title." (Jessen). Our copy bears no mention of the edition. 2. VANDAL (Albert): En karriole à travers la Suède et la Norwège. Enriched with woodcuts drawn by L. Breton from photographs and sketches. Paris, E. Plon et Cie, 1876. One volume. 11 by 17.5 cm. The author "was in charge of a mission to Iceland in 1885. Carried out during the summer of 1886, the mission's aim was to bring back a complete herbarium of plants growing in Iceland, specimens of terrestrial and marine fauna (mainly coastal crustaceans) and mineralogical samples. Labonne, who was only able to fully accomplish the first part of the mission, drew the essential conclusions in his work on Iceland and the Faeroeer archipelago [...] Before him, only one work on Iceland had been written [...]" (D.B.F.). 5.
