Old ownership stamp on title page. In contrast to his previous anti-theater works, the author uses secular and pagan arguments to defend his point of view, citing literary figures such as Rousseau, Gresset and La Fontaine, as well as certain ancient authors. The text was a great success. The theme was fashionable at the time, with d'Alembert's text answered by Rousseau, who was also opposed to theater.
