CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (Miguel de): The ingenious Hidalgo Don Qu - Lot 154

CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (Miguel de): The ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. Illustrations by Henry Lemarié. Paris, les Heures Claires, 1960. 4 volumes.² 19 by 24 cm. Leaves, in illustrated embossed paperback cover, with folder and slipcase illustrated with the initials of the author and his hero. The spine of the dust jacket is, as usual, unstained, and the slipcases have minor defects. One case split on one side. Otherwise very good condition, free of foxing. One of 250 copies on vellum (the only paper) N°366, to which a suite in black with remarks has been attached in a slipcase. This suite is particularly valuable, as the remarks are in fact preparatory sketches, numerous on each plate, and going beyond the illustration they accompany. These sketches provide a detailed view of Lemarié's work as an illustrator: each element of the scene is drawn separately, from different angles, until it comes together in the final illustration. The suite comprises 92 plates. In the text, the illustration is perfectly fresh, the colors vibrant... A beautiful and generous illustration of this modern text.
