"If Stahl can be considered the first to orient medicine towards biology, Frédéric Hoffmann (1660 - 1742) is the creator of an essentially rational system based on mechanical principles. A disciple of George Wolfang Wedel (1645 - 1721), one of the greatest iatro-chemists of his time, Hoffmann subsequently lived in close contact with Robert Boyle (1627 - 1691), the great English chemist and physicist, and in 1694 became a professor at the University of Halle. He had frequent relations with Ramazzini, of whom he was very fond, and was in touch with many of the Italian scientists of his time." (A. Castiglioni, History of Medicine, p. 479).
His attention to the role of the nervous system in physiology and pathogenesis contributed to a gradual shift in medical approach from preoccupation with the so-called humours and vascular hydrodynamics to that of neuromuscular action and sensitivity." (D.S.B. VI).
